[An earlier blog post discussed the importance of why drinking and eating during labour helps prevent medical interventions . For more detail refer back to earlier blog post on the website.]
Best fluids during labour: broths, water, coconut water and labour aid.
Labour aid, a midwife’s recipe 🙂
- ¼ cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
- 2cups coconut water
- ¼ tsn seasalt
- A few drops rescue remedy
- 1 Tbsn liquid calcium/magnesium
- 2 Tbsn raw honey
This should allow you 100 calories per 250ml/ 8oz of labour aid.
Studies have shown that women burn at least 50-100cal/ hour during labour.
Therefore if you are at the point where you have no appetite, just one cup of this per hour should meet your calorie needs to prevent ketosis due to calorie restrictions. BUT you should be drinking additional water to this since dehydration can still lead to ketosis.
